Gallerific: A Modern HTML5 Lightroom Web Gallery

Latest update May 2016.
Also in Español, Français & Deutch.

This post is to announce the release of a powerful new Web Gallery plugin for Adobe Lightroom.

Like many photographers, I use Lightroom to manage my photos and do most of my adjustments, and it's just great. But when it comes to exporting them in an easily viewable way, I was shocked to realize how poor the options were. The included galleries are simply ancient; most of them use Adobe Flash, which is being phased out on the web, is slow and painful to use and is a security headache to boot. The rest use decade-old HTML code and produce web pages that are just plain painful to use. And searching around, I wasn't able to find any third-party web albums that worked reasonably well either, especially for larger sets of photos.

The free Gallerific HTML5 Web Gallery plugin is here to fix all of that and bring Lightroom web exports into the present.

Features:
  • Allows you to create great albums, with captions (or not), from the program you already use to manage your photos and metadata.
  • The entire web site is generated automatically, with multiple customization options. No special expertise is needed, but there are customization options for those wanting more control.
  • Albums are fast, responsive, and support large numbers of images (up to thousands, anyway).
  • Albums are standards-compliant, using Javascript, HTML5 and CSS3 - and no obsolete Flash! They should work well on any modern web browser or device, and have great backward compatibility too. They even work minimally if your browser doesn't support Javascript.
  • Albums follow modern responsive web design principles, automatically adapting to the size of the web browser or mobile display.
  • Images can be navigated by mouse or touch screen (including by swiping), or by using keyboard shortcuts (Left/Right, Page Up/Down, Home, End, Space).
  • For a hands-free experience, you can play a slideshow to flip through photos automatically.
  • The web page uses no server-side scripting, so it can be served very cheaply from a static web server such as Amazon S3 (or any other web server).
  • Lightroom versions 2.0 to 6 (and CC) should all be supported
  • Runs under Windows or MacOS (generated galleries are viewable under any OS)
  • Available in English, Español, Français, & Deutch
  • Totally FREE!

Version 1.0 (22 July 2015, in brief):

Smart image pre-fetching for immediate transitions between images, touch support, responsive design adapts to page size. Thumb navigation. Captions may overlay image or lie below it. Various configuration options, color schemes and example templates. A limited representation of the album is viewable as a preview inside Lightroom. Center-crops images to create aesthetically-pleasing square thumbnails (something Lightroom doesn't support).

New in version 1.1 (23 August 2015):
  • Album loading speed is massively improved, using a variety of techniques.
  • Greatly improved mobile / touch device support:
    • Smaller mobile devices, or tablets in portrait orientation are shown thumbnails on the bottom, with native, re-flow-enabled scrolling. This means that thumbnails scroll totally naturally for touchscreens, without losing any functionality on small window non-touch devices (buttons and mouse-wheel will work in this case).
    • Apple iOS bug causing flickering animations has been addressed.
    • Very small devices like phones are now supported without any quirks.
    • Pinching to zoom will open full size images (when full size image links are provided).
  • Adds options to not include full size images, and to disable ability to right click for saving images.

New in version 1.2 (11 September 2015):
  • Full gallery previews are now available inside Lightroom! Now almost all functionality and styling can be seen when changing settings.
  • Galleries can now be social media sharing enabled. Users can click to share galleries via Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Pinterest.
  • Maps from Google can now be opened for any image with geo-location data (GPS or city/country).
  • The icon scheme has been standardized. High quality, scalable SVG icons are shown in 95% of browsers, with PNG images used as a backup for the rest.
  • Page loading is even faster now, and more robust, using CDNs where possible. It still works when you're running locally (even if offline), or if CDN services are blocked or down.
  • The album is now compatible with Internet Explorer all the way back to 5.5 and other older browsers as well as Opera Mini.
  • Additional customization options.
  • Other minor improvements and bug fixes.

New in version 1.3 (12 January 2016):
  • Much greater control over where to place identity plate (logo), titles, and contact info
  • Allow customization of all text in generated galleries
  • Internationalization - now includes versions in Spanish, French and German
  • Better appearance on low-performance devices
  • Various minor improvements and bug fixes, and additional documentation
New in version 1.3.1 (9 May 2016):
  • New tool to optionally allow downloading all images in the gallery.
  • You can now choose the maximum number of thumbnail columns that will be shown (from 2-4). Also improved the layout and use of screen real estate to allow slightly larger image area.
  • Various minor bug fixes and improvements.
Update to version 1.3.1 (7 September 2017):
  • Minor bugfixes for viewing GPS position and auto-starting slideshows.

Installation:
  • Unzip the "GallerificAlbum.lrwebengine" folder and copy this to the Lightroom Web Galleries folder. This folder can be opened within Lightroom preferences (Win: Edit->Preferences, Mac: Lightroom->Preferences) by clicking on the "Show Lightroom Presets Folder" button then opening the Web Galleries folder.
    • On a Mac this is located under: /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Web Galleries/
    • On Windows Vista/7/8, this is normally under: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Lightroom\Web Galleries\
    • On Windows XP this is normally under: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Adobe\Lightroom\Web Galleries\
  • Recommended but optional: Install the set of templates ("skins") for albums by copying the "Gallerific-Templates" folder into the Web Templates\ folder under the Lightroom presets folder. These will give you a good idea of output options and possible color schemes.
  • (Re-)Start Lightroom; the Gallerific gallery should appear in the list under the Web workflow

Usage:
  • As with any web album, select the images you wish to export using the Library view in Lightroom. Be sure they have all the metadata you want to include in the album. When you're happy with the images and their order, open the Web view.
  • Select the "Gallerific HTML5 Gallery" from the Layout style at the top right.
  • In the Web view, choose the options you want. Enter titles, descriptions, customize your image captions and use a custom logo, and choose where they appear. Customize your color scheme and how images will appear. Choose the size of the gallery image slide and an expanded full size image to be generated, as well as caption metadata and watermark to include. You can use the Preview in Browser button to check out your album’s appearance. And then simply Export to disk or Upload (to a server via FTP/SFTP) the complete album when you’re ready! The resulting HTML pages and supporting files will be generated in the folder or server location you selected.
    • You can view the gallery on your local computer by opening the file index.html in a web browser.
    • After exporting to disk, the generated folder can be loaded onto a web server for access via the web or just copied to a CD/DVD or shared folder to share with others.
  • More details about creating web albums in general are available from Adobe.

Click here to see an example album - note that galleries are quite customizable and this is just an example.

Many thanks:
This project couldn't have been done without the galleriffic and jquery history jQuery plugins; these have been extensively modified and improved for this project and have been forked on github. The project also benefits from the touchSwipe and transit plugins, the grunticon toolkit, the mediamatch polyfilljszipfilesaver.js, and fallback.js. Tablet image above is thanks to zanilic.com. Loader icons were generated from spiffygif.com and preloaders.net and compressed with kraken.io. Scalable icon designs are by Elusive, Typicons, Font Awesome, and Icomoon. And thanks to Henriette Donis for invaluable help in translating.

I'd love to hear about any websites that you create using this tool. Feel free to email me or leave a message below to let me know! And if you have any problems, suggestions or requests, leave them here too.

If you find the Gallerific Web plugin useful to you or your business, or if it's saving you time or money, I'd really appreciate a contribution. It's taken me countless hours to set this up and make it work well (now I realize why there are so few other options available!). Every bit counts. And many thanks.

Addendum: If you want to deploy your website onto Amazon S3, I provide an automated approach here (A word of warning that unlike creating an album, it does require somewhat advanced computer skills. An easier, but less efficient, option is to simply drag and drop the album using a GUI tool like S3 Browser or CrossFTP).

  2. Thanks for your feedback. I just retested it on my only android device, which is smaller, and had no problems with android browser (4.4), or chrome, firefox, or UC browser. It may have been while I updated the site yesterday. If you or others are seeing issues, what behavior are you seeing and what version android browser do you have? Feel free to send screenshots or details via email.

  3. Hello, the gallery looks REALLY nice - and on Chrome it works like a charm, on Firefox though it does not show any images - tried it on two PCs, same result, first load shows blank text (only title and headlines, after reloading the page, the images appear):

    Mind checking it out yourself?

    1. Hi Jens, Glad you like it! I had a look at the site and it appears there is some issue between a library I use (grunticon), firefox, and how your server serves the files. Not quite sure what is going wrong to be honest. But as a workaround, you can remove lines 61-65 (about grunticon) from index.html, and add <link href="res/icons/icons.fallback.css" rel="stylesheet"> after the </script> tag. Hopefully that should work. Very nice watches BTW!

  4. Hey Justin, thanks for the reply - unfortunately the problem remains. :( But nevertheless I made a small donation, because I really love your work and I am incredibly grateful for not having to invest that much time myself, even though it's only for private use. And who knows, maybe you find the issue with FF once. Would be cool. :)

Keep up the good work - and thanks again!

  5. Nice job, Justin - using it on my personal photo site. One suggestion - can an option be added to right or left align the identity plate? I'm doing a workaround to force my graphic logo to the left by adding canvas to the right, but it doesn't scale to different browsers and orientations.

    1. Hi Michael, the new release 1.3.1 of the album now allows limiting the maximum number of thumbnail columns to 2-4. A single column wouldn't work as the pager needed to page through them would be bigger than a single thumbnail. But I think it already makes a big difference if you want more emphasis on the main image.

  7. Hi (again), I have found the problem - if the Location field has an apostrophe in the name then the Home page will not load any images.

  9. Hello, I appreciate the work you have put into this plugin. Would you have recommendations on how to add a gallery to a Google Site. Would I upload it as an attachment? Thank you for any help.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you're referring to sites.google.com, that won't work. You need a web hosting provider. Apparently google drive can act as a web host (although I haven't tried) - google "host website on google drive". Then just copy all gallerific-generated files there and link to index.html.

    1. I see. I'll look into adding that as an option. In the meantime you can change line 316 in footer.html to 24 (=3*8) and things should mostly work with 8 rows (although if the user's window is narrow, things might get a bit ugly).

  16. Hi Great plugin!! Is it possible to have multiple LR albums with one unique index.html file? I have more than one collection and would like to have an unique page that I can use to select an album. Is it possible? Thank you very much!!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is possible, but you have to do it with standard website-creation tools. The idea is that you put each album in its own folder and the main page in the root: ./index.html (main page), ./gallery1/index.html and ./gallery2/index.html. The main page index.html can design to look however you like, and can link to both galleries.

Another question. I am trying to have the same height on pages for portrait and landscape photos. Is there a way of doing it? That is, keeping the same photo height independently of being a portrait or a landscape photo? Thanks again

      Delete
    3. Currently the page will expand to fit the height of the image. Image size is controlled by the size of the larger edge (under Appearance->Image Sizes). You could set this small enough that the height would not overflow the size of the thumbnails; then the page will not change size.

  18. Hi Justin,
As a real Estate Photographer I have published Virtual Tours in Flash. Turning to HTML5, it seems that when I try to enter a property address into the "Site" line, an address is too long and main picture screen reduces so that an image doesn't display. Is there a fix for this? Can I change the font size? Many Thanks.............bruce@vtsrq.com

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hi Justin,
As per the above question, I answered it. I use quote marks in property addresses and something in your code doesn't like that. When I get rid of the quotation marks, the line loads perfectly. The second part of my question stands, can I manage the size of the text?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Bruce. To use quote characters in text, you could use the html code " (other symbols are here: http://www.ascii.cl/htmlcodes.htm). As for text sizing: you can leave the site title empty and just fill in the collection title or collection description; these have smaller fonts and would likely work for you. If you still want to change the site title size, you'll need to use a text editor to modify css/galleriffic.css (in the generated gallery, or if you want this for all albums, then in the res/ directory of the plugin) and change the font-size setting under h1. Best of luck!

      Delete
    2. Thanx for your reply. It's not a problem to omit quote marks. The feedback I am receiving from my clients are automatic slideshow start (I checked the box to start the slideshow automatically but it doesn't work when the slideshow is loaded by a client) and music seems to be a big objection. Do you have plans to include music in a future update. In slideshow pro (discontinued) I was able to use the music I have in silent folder in my website. Sorry to present these objections.....Just trying to serve my customers................bsa

    3. To play music in modern browsers, it should be possible to put this in the "Markup to insert into head" field:
      <script type="text/javascript">new Audio('_URL_').play()</script>
(replacing _URL_ with a url or path to your music from index.html), although I have not tested this. I'll consider adding such a feature in a future version.
And it looks like there was a bug with auto-starting the slideshow. Thanks for letting me know. I've just uploaded a new version with that fixed.

    1. Hi Laurent,
To download a single image, all browsers support some function to download. To download the display-size image this is normally right-click -> save image as. To download the full-size image, they can right click the "Full size image" link and do "Save link as", or just open it and then "save image as".

  23. Hi Justin,
Thanks again still working on getting this to work for me. Getting close, the option for a full screen slide show would be awesome. So far I am having trouble embedding the index.html code into another page without it messing with the pages title fonts size and colors if the gallery is not in the sites root directory so for now I am opening other galleries that are not embedded. The sites main page is created with CoffeeCup Responsive Site Designer.

    1. Hi Bob, Glad you're liking the gallery. Sorry to take a while to get back to you, as I've been traveling. This gallery wasn't designed with the idea that it would be embedded in another web page, which probably accounts for the problems you've encountered. I think it assumes there will be at least one title (I'll see about removing that assumption for next version). If you want to embed multiple galleries in a single page, I'd look into using the html iframe tag. It allows multiple pages to appear as if they are on the same page (but the components actually point to different URLs. That might neatly do what you want. Good luck! P.S. I have another gallery I was working on that does a full-screen slideshow. It's not ready for prime time yet, but stay tuned!

I really appreciate the work you have done with this plugin. I started testing yesterday and I liked it a lot. I would like to know if it is possible to visualize bigger thumbnails. 1. Hi, Glad you like it! I'm afraid it's not possible to change the size of thumbnails currently. You can see if you can work some HTML magic, but it will likely be complicated, as most of the page component sizes are interdependent.

  28. I've recently started working with geotagged photos. I really like your implementation but I'm having trouble with it. Photos I've taken in Corsica wind up being mapped to Eritrea. The first photo on this website http://www.dstreamd.com/Photos/Test/index.html is coded in the html as 14.5516667,39.3097222 but if I alt-click on the GPS field in the LR Maps module it gives the coordinates as 42.24266681,8.65292092 which is correct. I'm using Lightroom Classic CC release 7.5. Any idea how I can resolve this?

    1. I'm not sure what might be going on here. We use the GPS tag provided by com.adobe.GPS, which is assumed to be in Degree Minutes Seconds format. This is sent via a section of the GUI which is marked "Location Data (Do not edit this)". My only guess is that either your photos have multiple locations associated with them (and we're getting the wrong one), that the Location data field has been changed somehow, or something different is going on in your version of Lightroom (I don't have access to it to test unfortunately).

  30. I built a small test gallery. When I launch the index.html file locally into Chrome, the loading progress spinner sits there for many minutes before it loads the opening page. Subsequent pages also take minutes to load. I suspect a Windows (Windows 7) setting is preventing this. I've tested the same gallery in Chrome on a different computer (Windows 10) and it loads perfectly.

Are there any settings I need to be aware of to solve this behaviour?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It could be something to do with your internet on the windows 7 machine? The gallery will first try to access some standard javascript libraries from fast servers on the internet; if these fail for whatever reason (like that you have no internet) it will load them from the same directory/url path as your gallery. Normally, this feature makes the gallery load faster, but if your internet is down and you're loading the gallery locally, I could see that happening. If you plan to use it primarily locally, you can remove the line <script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.11.3/jquery.min.js"></script> from your index.html.

      Delete
    2. Yes, the Windows 7 machine is not connected to the Internet and never will be.

I tried your suggestion and it worked. Thank you.

Do you have any plans to support 360-degree panoramic photos?

  32. Hi Bruce, I don't have any plans at this time to integrate audio into the plugin. There are just too many variations to have to handle (with or without controls? Where and how would they appear? Should the audio start at page load? Etc) and there is no way to manage the actual audio files. However, the approach I mentioned in my earlier comment (of markup to add to insert into head) should still work. More info on Audio in html5 is here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/Guide/Audio_and_video_delivery/Cross-browser_audio_basics As for your new wordpress site, I don't see why it wouldn't work, but I'm not too familiar with Wordpress.

The only enhancement I'd like to see would be the capability to have a click on the large image direct to the full-size image instead of advancing to the next image in the gallery. This is trivial, so please only consider it if others are interested as well. I greatly appreciate all of your efforts and generosity in developing this great tool. Thank you!

For my own, I have only modify the head section for seo like this:
    - removal of the canonical link
-modify robots link for noindex, follow

  35. Hello Justin,
All character strings used in the generated web album (e.g. next photo, play slide show, etc.) can be customized.
can you tell me how to proceed?

    1. Hi Gerald, to change these strings, go to the strings folder and choose thee subfolder for your language (eg, EN for english). Then in TranslatedStrings.txt, you will see a list of "x=y" pairs, like this:

      "$$$/AgWPG/Templates/HTML/DefaultText/ShowCaption=Show Caption"

You can change the 'y' part (ie, Show Caption) to whatever you want.

If you want to support a new language, simply copy the file to a new folder named with the 2-character code for the language and translate the 'y' strings to that language. It should work automatically. If you do this, please send them my way and I'll include them for others to use too.

      Hope that helps.
